The Best food for a Chihuahua

The best Chihuahua food

Selecting your Food

Selecting the right food for your Chihuahua is essential for it’s wellbeing. In this section we’ll cover the most important nutrients and food types for your Chihuahua. However, before we go into the details, we have one important message: do not be fooled by the marketing campaigns of the big dog-food brands! These companies position their products as an all-in-one solution, which is far from true. Most “premium” dog foods sold in your average grocey store are just not good enough. Specifically, they do not offer the correct balance of vegetables, meat and nutrients. We advise you to avoid the big commercial brands and instead visit your local pet-store. Every well respected pet-store has a good selection and variety of dog foods. Furthermore, they typically hold more niche and specialised dog foods. Another option is to buy your dog food online. A fourth and final option – and by far our favourite one – is home cooking.

Home Cooking is the best way to provide your Chihuahua with healthy and balanced meals. Since you are preparing the food yourself, you have full control on what you are feeding your Chihuahua. Say goodbye to by-products, colouring and preservatives. Only the best for your Chihuahua! Most importantly, you get to use the best ingredients of all: love and passion! Serving your Chihuahua a home made meal is very fulfilling. Additionally, home cooking can also save you money. For example: if you are roasting a chicken for your family, set aside a small portion for your Chihuahau. You are killing two birds with one stone! Be careful not to give any of the bones to your dog though.

Food types

Cooking healthy and balanced Chihuahua meals is relatively simple. Adhere to the following food types and you can’t go wrong:

  • Meat: by far the most important food type. Essential source of proteins.
  • Vegetables: second most important food type. Source of vitamins and minerals.
  • Carbohydrates: food such as rice and pasta are great choices.
  • Fruit: some fruits are great for Chihuahuas. Source of vitamins and anti-oxidants

Selecting the right meat should be your number 1 priority. Eating enough proteins is very important for Chihuahuas. Great options are:

  • Organs: brain, kidney and liver are excellent choices
  • Lean meat: chicken, turkey or fish. Occasionally lamb is a good choice too

Secondly, you should pick out the right vegetables. It is important to include sufficient vegetables into your Chihuahuas diet and food as they are the main source of vitamins and minerals. Stick to the following very healthy options:

  • carrots
  • peas
  • sweet potatoes
  • zucchini
  • broccoli
  • spinash

Avoid regular potatoes as they are considered filler food. Sweet potatoes are perfectly fine.

Thirdly, carbohydrates. They are the fuel for your Chihuahua’s body. Rice and pasta are perfect options. Chihuahuas are known for loving pastas, so you can’t go wrong here.

Finally, fruit. Aim for fruits with high levels of anti-oxidants such as blueberries, apple and raspberries.

A perfectly balanced diet

Your end product should be a meal that consists of:

  • 40% meat – clean and lean meat
  • 30 to 40% vegetables – healthly vegetables
  • 20 to 30% starch / carbs – pasta or rice
  • Some fruit to top it all off – fruit with anti-oxidants
